Medical research charity

### [The Lister Institute](/our-work/the-lister-institute/)

One of the UK’s oldest medical research charities. Its Fellowships, Studentships and Grants each have their own clear route, for applicants, reviewers and donors.

> We worked with Leigh from Stuffed Monkey Web Design for a number of years. He supported us with our website and IT support. Leigh has been really helpful and easy to work with. He communicates clearly, responds promptly, and provides practical support when needed. Happy to recommend.

## What a charity website has to do

Your website talks to people who want help, people who might give, people who might volunteer and the funders checking you out. Each of them should find their route quickly.

**Say what you do in one line.** A visitor should know who you help and how within a few seconds of landing.

**Show the difference you make.** Stories, photos and figures you can stand behind, kept up to date.

**Make giving easy.** A clear donate button on every page that goes to the donation page you already use.

**Bring in volunteers and trustees.** What the role involves, how much time it takes and who to contact.

**Keep news and events current.** A news or events page your team can post to, from a Standard build up.

**Work for everyone.** Plain language, readable text and colour contrast, alt text on images and pages you can use with a keyboard.

## Built for the way a small charity works

Most small charities do not have a web team. The website is looked after by a member of staff, a volunteer or a trustee, on top of everything else. So we keep it simple: pages your team can understand, a monthly plan that covers hosting, backups and updates, and a person to ring when something needs changing.

The Lister Institute funds early-career biomedical researchers through several routes, and each one needed to stand on its own. We gave Fellowships, Studentships and Grants their own clear sections, so applicants and reviewers find the right one without reading everything else first. We supported the charity with its website and IT for a number of years.

## Questions from charities

### How much does a charity website cost?

A Pay Monthly Website is £299 setup, then £29, £69 or £250 a month depending on the plan. A site you own starts from £750 for a Starter build. Registered charities get 20% off the setup fee and builds. No VAT to add. The price you see is the price you pay. Every price is on our [prices page](/pricing/).

### Do you offer a discount for charities?

Yes. Registered charities get 20% off the Pay Monthly Website setup fee and one-off builds. Monthly plans and care plans stay at the standard price. We ask for your registered charity number when we quote.

### Can we take donations through the website?

Yes, through a clear donate button on every page that goes to the donation page you already use, or to one you choose. Tell us which donation platform you use and we will check how it works with your site before we quote.

### Can we update the website ourselves without a developer?

Yes, if you want to. A Standard build includes a news or blog page you edit yourself, and a Growth build adds a CMS for the whole site. If you would rather send us the changes, Local includes 30 minutes a month and Complete SEO 60. Beyond that, changes are £30 per 30 minutes. A change is a small edit to what is already on the site: text, photos, prices, opening hours and small tweaks. New pages are £75 each, one-off, and new features are quoted first.

### Will the website be accessible to everyone?

We build with accessibility in mind from the start: a clear heading structure, readable text and colour contrast, alt text on images, and pages that work with a keyboard. Tell us about anyone who uses your site in a particular way, and we will design with them in mind.

### Can you work with a small charity on a small budget?

Yes. A Pay Monthly Website has 20% off the £299 setup for registered charities, then £29 a month on Site & Hosting, which covers hosting, backups, updates and fixes to anything we built. There is no minimum term, and you can move up a plan when you are ready.

### How long does a charity website take to build?

A standard small website takes four to six weeks from brief to launch. It goes quickest when someone at the charity can gather the words, photos and sign-offs early.

### What happens after launch? Who looks after it?

We do. Every monthly plan includes managed hosting, daily backups, uptime monitoring and software updates. The same person who built the site answers when you ring. See [Pay Monthly Websites](/all-in-plan/) for what each plan adds.

### Do we own the website and the domain?

Your domain, the content and photos you supply, and your Google Business Profile are always yours. On a Pay Monthly Website, the code, the content we wrote and images we created stay ours while the site is rented; buy it out any time for £550 and the site, its code and the content we wrote for it become yours. With a one-off build, they are yours once it is paid for.

### What should a charity website include?

At the least: who you help and how, how to donate, how to volunteer, your latest news, your registered charity number and a way to contact you. After that, it depends on what you need people to do.
