WordPress, Webflow, Shopify or Bespoke? Choosing a CMS for Your Business

A practical decision guide for small and medium UK businesses choosing between WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, headless CMS and custom builds.

CMSStrategy

Almost every business we meet asks us the same question in the first call: “should we build it in WordPress?” Here is how we actually advise clients.

Start with the question below the question

The real question is never “WordPress or not”, it is who edits content, how often, and with what level of comfort?

  • If a marketing manager edits weekly, you want a visual page-builder experience.
  • If a developer edits rarely, you want clean code and version control.
  • If a whole team edits, you want strong roles, permissions and version history.
  • If content is syndicated to app, TV screens or partners, you want headless.

Where each CMS earns its keep

WordPress

Still the default for most Hertfordshire SMEs. Huge ecosystem, familiar to editors, enormous plugin library. Weakness: plugin sprawl can kill performance and security if not disciplined.

Webflow

Amazing visual builder, solid hosting, no plugins to maintain. Weakness: pricing scales awkwardly, limited at true enterprise scale, custom code is possible but fiddly.

Shopify

Unbeatable for product retail, from single-SKU DTC to multi-region Plus. Weakness: content-marketing features are weaker than a true CMS, transaction fees add up.

Headless (Sanity, Strapi, Payload, Contentful, Storyblok)

Clean separation of content and presentation. Ideal when you publish the same content to multiple channels. Weakness: more moving parts, needs an engineering mindset to run.

Astro / Next.js + headless

What we increasingly recommend for fast marketing sites where performance is critical. Static-first, ludicrously fast, easy to scale. Editors get a clean admin UI; users get sub-1-second pages.

Bespoke

When no off-the-shelf platform fits, typically for membership sites, directories, marketplaces and multi-tenant SaaS. Powerful but significantly more expensive to build and maintain.

The three questions we ask before recommending a CMS

  1. Who is going to edit this, and how confident are they with technology?
  2. What is the realistic annual budget for maintenance and hosting?
  3. What is this site plugging into? (CRM, ERP, booking system, app)

The answers almost always point clearly to one platform over the others.
